Flint’s durability is one of the reasons it has been used as a type of building material since antiquity. It is also portable, available and inexpensive.
No longer requiring a backing block, the flint is built directly against the flat face of the SureCav panel. Flint can be prepared in various ways, such as snapped, knapped or squared, producing a variety of decorative effects that can be incorporated as a feature effect in walls.
The SureCav cavity-spacer panels come in 2 depths, 25mm and 50mm. SureCav25 provides the solution to successfully reducing the wall width, or allowing for more insulation in the cavity, helping to bring down U-Values. SureCav25 is suitable for construction throughout the UK and Ireland with a current BBA certificate that approves a protected 25mm residual cavity.
For traditional internal blockwork: Build in the wall ties as usual, every 450mm vertically. The SureCav panels will slot between the ties, and can be held in place with the wall tie clips. If additional support for the flint is needed, extra ties can be fixed by drilling and plugging through the pods using the SureCav seal washers. Alternatively, a helical tie can be fixed through any flat face of the SureCav panel (not through the pods).
For timber-frame: Fix the structural ties along the top of each row of SureCav at the specified stud centres. Cut the long joining strip up to the tie and continue the other side with the off-cut. If additional non-structural ties are needed for support, us helical ties, as above, or screw frame ties into the sheathing through the pods, using the SureCav seal washer.
A reduction in wall thickness of 25mm will increase the internal dimensions of the property by
50mm in each direction and result in an average of 1.25% increased floor space over two
storeys. Already an additional 5% floor space will have been gained by removing the need for
100mm concrete backing blocks. This can rise to upwards of 6% or more additional floor-space
in cases where random stone is used in very severe weather zones.
Consider this: with just a 1.25% gain, this is equivalent to the floor space of 1 extra house on an 70 house site!
